    Psychic Medium Cindy Lee

Halloween, that spooky, scary time of year. The time of year that our children are looking at all the retail stores for that special costumes. The time of year that candy manufacturers make a mint. (every pun intended) :) The time of year that decorations go up outside and in. The time of year that you may have a graveyard on your front lawn or a Tigger dressed up as Count Dracula. Yes, it’s a fun time of year.

But for many of us it is also the time of year when the veil between the worlds is the thinnest. It is the time of the year when the spirits are closest to our reality. And if any of you have any untrained abilities, this is also the time of year when some of that spooky stuff happens to you.

It is also a time of year when people like to attend séances. The time of year to communicate with loved ones who have passed over to the “other side”.

What is a séance exactly? It is a French word meaning seat, session, or to sit. We have coined the term séance to mean communication with spirit. Many mediums will ask that you sit in a circle, with hands touching. Those of you old enough remember all the old movies when the lights would be dimmed, candles lit, everyone sitting around a table, touching hands, while the medium would ask the spirits to appear.

In real life, it isn’t so much different than that, minus the theatrics. In a normal séance, I would ask that you sit where you are comfortable, not in a defined circle. The touching of hands is not necessary to communicate with the dead. You are already there opening your hearts to those loved ones who have passed away. I begin by sharing a little of my knowledge of séances. I would then ask that everyone get comfortable, I would say a prayer, and then open myself up to communication.

A little about spirits. If Grandma was full of life and fun on the physical side of things, that is the way she will be on the spirit side of things. If Grandpa was a sourpuss that thought all women should wear dresses, be barefoot and pregnant and always cooking, that’s the way he’ll be on that side as well. Just because a person passes from this world into the next, it does not mean a miracle happens and they go from grumpy to love, light and happiness. Many times they will share very mundane things with us. But every so often, they tell us something of utmost importance. I always listen to what I’m being told and will do things accordingly to how important I feel it is.

During a séance, for the medium, you have a lot of spirits milling around. Some of them will go immediately to stand by their relatives, while some others may just be hanging around waiting for their turn to share. And there are times that some spirits will just drop in even though they have no relatives there. As a medium, it’s like we are a lighthouse. We have a beacon of light we send out. And like lighthouses, the intensity varies. That is what attracts the spirits to us.

During a séance, I’ve had spirits get together to play cards, have coffee, tea, or beer in a corner and just chat. I’ve had spirits flirt with each other. I’ve never had any that started a fight. Although, I’ve had a few little old grandmothers shaking their fingers at the younger generation over on that side.

Mediumship or Spiritualism has been around for many years. Long before it was started in this country, both the English and French had been dabbling in it. But what started it over here in the US? The Fox Sisters. On March 31, 1848, the Fox Sisters said they heard a knocking in their wall in their house in Hydesville, NY. They found a system where they could communicate with the spirit, thought to be that of a traveling salesman who had been murdered. For a number of years, they had stuck to their stories. Margaret Fox had said much later in her life that it was all a hoax, that they had made the sounds by cracking their toes. Shortly before her death, she once again recanted and said they really had talked with spirit.

Let’s go back to the movies again-you’re once again sitting in your circle, and out pops all kinds of spirits, whirling around the room, dive bombing the unsuspected, tipping the table over, picking up drinking glasses, etc. Theatrics again. But there was a time when physical manifestation did occur. Over in England, they had what they called Spirit Closets. The medium would go into one of these and through the use of ectoplasm would make objects that would sometime be tossed over the top of the closet. That was the time of table tipping and seeing things move. As the movement progressed, the physical manifestations became less and less. Now the more spiritual, would occur. Meaning that your modern day séances normally do not produce any objects, only the communication between the living and the dead.

I have been a participant in séances both as a medium and as an attendee. On either side of the table, so to speak, it is an interesting and intriguing place to be. To get messages that we might otherwise not be able to receive, or to be able to give those messages out, it gives us a feeling of love and being loved.

    Till next time.
