Ahhhh, you have finally decided to give meditation a try! You’ve asked all your friends who meditate, you’ve read books, you’ve gone to websites. Now it’s time to start.
But then you stop-wait a minute-this friend told you to be outside so you would be grounded, but you live on a busy road. This book said to sit in a chair, feet planted firmly on the ground, with hands hanging at your side. This website said to sit on the floor in a lotus position, breathing a certain way till you feel yourself going into a trance!
STOP! WHICH ONE SHOULD I DO???
I am a firm believer in gaining information when embarking on anything new. I have been meditating for over 30 years and have heard all the different ways to meditate. And what works best for me, might not work best for you. So, do what feels right to you.
When I first decided to start to meditate, I read the books. Then I finally found a group of people that got together for meditation. I decided that a group was best for me because that way there was someone there who would lead us.
So off I go to the meditation. The teacher started out with the breathing/relaxation exercises, then when she felt we had reached a relaxed state, she verbally painted us a picture. My only problem was that even though I was actually deep, I was still at the start of the darn meditation, trying to figure out what to wear!
After a few times of that, I finally figured it wasn’t going to matter what was being worn and I was finally truly on my way to meditation.
I took several more psychic classes to learn more. Each teacher was different about how to sit, what to eat, what to wear, etc. Again, I seemed to be able to go down far enough, but upon hearing what everyone else was sharing about their meditation, I started to wonder if I was cut out for all of this.
One of the things that most teachers seemed to feel was genuinely important was the morining and night meditations. Now, I’m all for that, but when you have 3 small children running around, a husband/mate, and a bunch of animals that all want your attention……well, it’s just kind of hard to keep up with that whole am/pm thing.
So, I started to search out within me, what was going to work best for me and still allow me to meditate.
This is what I found that worked for me. Upon waking or while I was in the shower, I would clear my mind, and ask the powers that be what they needed to tell me. I would listen, knowing that I was being given this information on my soul level. I would then begin my day with that little bit of needed knowledge and silence.
I would take time in the shower, in the bathroom (yes, I know, but it worked for me), when I was outside, or going to bed at night. I would try to once or twice a week to set aside time for a much longer meditation.
If I was doing a long meditation alone, I would use some type of equipment that would make a sound upon turning off so that it would bring me back to the present. I knew someone who had decided to do a meditation alone that ended up being almost an hour because she had nothing in place to bring her back. I would tell myself that when I heard the click of the tape recorder or there was no more music, that I would need to come back.
As I went further along this road, I became the teacher. I would do weekly meditation groups. I had decided that what had worked for me was what I would try. So I did the get comfortable (meaning sit however you want, but tell yourself you will remain grounded), go through the deep breathing and relaxation of body exercises, then I would set up the verbal picture-you are on the shore at the sea, it’s night out, but with a beautiful moon, etc. I would finally shut up and let everyone go where they wanted. I would usually allow 20-40 minutes to pass before I would bring them back into the room little by little. Then once they were all back, we would discuss the meditation.
I would alway stay “awake†throughout the whole meditation. But what happens when the teacher gets “taken†on a journey? That happened one time when I was using a drumming CD. I had started the meditation and the next thing I knew I was back in the room. I had been taken on a very serious journey. It was to give me more information about a past life that I had learned just a little bit about. When I came out of the meditation, the other 3 people were looking at me. I had asked them did they go under at all, they each said no. It’s amazing how the universe works to make sure everything is okay.
So what do I do now that my life is crazy? I have six cats, a dog, a mate, parents who I spend time with, 3 children who no longer live with me, but we see each other quite a bit. One daughter-the oldest-Denise who is engaged to be married, so we are out looking at dresses, etc? I’m still on my few minutes on waking up, in the shower/bathroom, a few mintues up on going to sleep and anything in the middle I can get.
My suggestion to any of you just starting on this path of meditation is to gather as much information as you can, sift through it to see what feels right to you, and then try a few different ways on for “sizeâ€. See what works for you. You will find the most comfortable “fit†and you’ll be on your way.
Till next time.
